Overview of the Enrollment Process

2010-2011 School Year

Step One:              Eligibility

Boston resident students who are entering grades 9 through 12, and have complied with the enrollment process, are eligible for the lottery.  In accordance with its non-discrimination and zero tolerance policy, Health Careers Academy (HCa) does not discriminate in enrollment on the basis of race, color, age, prior academic achievement, disability, gender, religion, national origin or sexual orientation.  If offered enrollment, students must provide proof of Boston residency in accordance with policies established by the Boston Public Schools.  Questions or concerns about individual student eligibility are handled by the Headmaster of HCa.

Step Two:              The Application Process

Students must submit a written application and attend a scheduled mandatory information session, with a parent or guardian, to be eligible for the enrollment lottery.  Applications are available after October 1 each year.  The application must be fully completed. Students, parents/guardian should pay careful attention to the Overview and instructional sections of the application.  Before mailing the application check that each part is completed. At least one of the two personal references must be received at HCa by the application deadline.

Step Three:                     The Lottery

Each January the Headmaster of HCa determines the number of students which will be admitted into each grade level.  The 2010 enrollment lottery will be held at the Academy on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.  A person not connected with the school will conduct the lottery.  Eligible applicants will be divided by grade into three groups:

Siblings of currently enrolled HCa students

Students currently enrolled in the Boston Public Schools

Other applicants – including students enrolled in private, parochial and charter schools, the METCO program, and public schools outside of Boston.

Names will be drawn randomly from the first group, and will be given a number rank in the order they are drawn.  When all names of group one students have been given a number, names of group two applicants will be drawn randomly, and they will be added to the list in the order they are drawn.   When all group two applicants have been ranked, names of group three applicants will be drawn, and they will be added to the list in the order they are drawn.  The result is a ranked list of applicants.

Step Four:            Notification and Waiting Lists

Notification letters will be mailed to all applicants within one week of the lottery to indicate the results.  Enrollment invitations will be made to the first 45 on the ranked lottery list for grade nine.   Applicants who are not invited to enroll will receive a letter indicating their number on the wait list.  Students who have been invited to enroll may schedule a second visit to the Academy during March or April in order make their final decision.  Invited students must accept or decline their invitation by April 16, 2010.  Students who decline the offer of enrollment will be treated as new applicants if they apply in subsequent years.  Spaces that become available after the lottery are offered to applicants in writing according to their number on the waiting list for their grade.  The waiting list is rolled over from year to year so that applicants need not re-apply for consideration in subsequent years.  Applicants who submit complete applications after the March lottery but before September 1 are added to the waiting list through a supplemental lottery process held on the last business day of May and August.  After September 1 prospective students must submit applications for the next year’s enrollment lottery.

Questions or concerns about the HCa enrollment policy or about individual student eligibility should be directed to Dr. Caren S. Walker Gregory, Executive Director/Headmaster, at (617) 373-8576.
